For a Better Brisbane

Is GoCard obsolete?

New York and New Jersey commuters in the USA are trialling a new contact-less payment system, similar to GoCard, but using credit cards, debit cards and other devices – such as mobile phones or key tags embedded with a RFID chip.

It’s all based around Mastercard’s PayPass system. (Visa has something similar, called payWave, but this blog is not aware of it being used as a commuter ticketing solution.) A number of ticketing options are available, depending on the operator:

  • Pay as you go
  • Pre-paid account (attracts 15% discount)
  • Passes (weekly, monthly and similar)

Perhaps in the future, there might be no need to visit the newsagent to buy a smart card. Instead, you could just tap your credit card, debit card or mobile phone.
